The Get to Know Tokaj International Summer University Successfully Concludes
The Get to Know Tokaj International Summer University, showcasing the natural, cultural and viticultural heritage of Tokaj-Hegyalja, has successfully come to an end. During the one-week programme, participants gained a comprehensive insight into the values of this historic wine region while taking part in academic lectures, professional workshops and field trips.
The Summer University programme began with an introduction to the history of the Tokaj Wine Region, its designation of origin and its specific viticultural and winemaking characteristics. The programme then focused on sustainable and organic grape cultivation, winemaking technologies, as well as the economic and legal aspects of the wine industry. Students also took part in sensory evaluation sessions, where, under the guidance of experts, they became familiar with the distinctive characteristics of Tokaji wines.
The professional lectures were complemented by a wide range of field visits. Participants visited, among others, the Oremus and Patricius wineries, the Grand Tokaj winery in Szegi, and the Research Institute of Viticulture and Oenology. Through visits to the Tokaj World Heritage Wine Museum, the library and museum of the Sárospatak Reformed College, the Kazinczy Ferenc Museum, and the Bortemplom Visitor and Event Centre, they also had the opportunity to explore the cultural and historical heritage of the region in greater depth.
During the second half of the week, the focus shifted towards sustainability and the impacts of climate change. Our lecturers gave presentations on the possibilities of regenerative viticulture and on adapting grape cultivation to a warming climate. These sessions clearly demonstrated how the traditions of the Tokaj Wine Region are closely connected with modern scientific approaches.
In addition to the professional activities, participants also had the opportunity to get to know one another and discover the Tokaj-Hegyalja region more closely. Numerous new professional and personal connections were established during the intensive week, and the students unanimously highlighted the lasting experiences they had gained. Several participants were already talking at the closing of the programme about their wish to return to Tokaj-Hegyalja and take part in the university’s international programmes again in the future.
The Get to Know Tokaj Summer University once again demonstrated that high-quality professional education, hands-on experience and the region’s unique natural, cultural and viticultural heritage can come together to create an experience that remains memorable and meaningful for participants in the long term.
