Our Researcher at the University of Barcelona’s International Ovid Conference
Dávid Molnár, a member of the Department of Cultural Heritage Studies and the Speculum Research Group, delivered a lecture at the international conference Ovid’s Metamorphoses through Time: Paratexts, Translations and Iconography, held at the University of Barcelona on 2–3 July 2026. The title of his presentation was Mátyás Csáktornyai’s Historical Song as the First Adaptation of Ovid’s Metamorphoses in Hungarian. [https://web.ub.edu/ca/web/projecte-recerca-medovid/conference]In his presentation, he introduced the historical song written by Mátyás Csáktornyai in 1592, which recounts the contest between Ajax and Odysseus for the arms of Achilles, based on Book 13 of Ovid’s Metamorphoses. The presentation examined how the Hungarian author transformed the ancient story into a three-part verse narrative structured with Latin-language arguments, and why the work can be regarded as the first known Hungarian-language translation of Ovid.
