Professors and students of our university participated in a prestigious international conference

The 2nd Tokaj/Sauternes Conference took place from 8-10 November 2023, organised by the University of Bordeaux, where the University of Tokaj was represented by a delegation of seven members. The three-day conference was opened by the Vice-Rector of the Université Bordeaux Montaigne, in memory of last year's very successful conference in Sárospatak. In her opening speech, Vice-Rector Caroline Le Mao stressed that the conferences and the niche study books, if the will is there, which are part of the Erasmus cooperation between THE and the University of Bordeaux, would ensure long-term collaboration between researchers, teachers and students from the two universities. The THE team presented the wine-related cultural heritage of Tokaj-Hegyalja from different approaches. István Monok gave a lecture on the legend of Paracelsus, Attila Tózsa-Rigó on the 16th-17th century trade in Tokaj wine, Tímea N. Kis on the cult of St. Orban in Monok, and Dóra Kalydy on the Tokaj community science project focusing on the collection and processing of wine labels. We were particularly pleased that the conference was also attended by Eszter Sipos, a second-year student of the THE Cultural Heritage Studies Master's programme, who in her highly successful presentation put the concept of Daniel Fischer's "terra" of 1732 into an international context. Two researchers from the Centre for Humanities Research, Kornél Nagy and Ferenc Tóth, also gave a unique presentation. Kornél Nagy gave a presentation on the medieval sources of vine-growing in Tokaj-Hegyalja, while Ferenc Tóth presented on the St. Martin tourist/pilgrimage route connecting Tours via Tokaj to the eastern Hungarian border.

In his closing remarks, Michel Figeac, head of the department, confirmed that the joint publication of the conference papers is not far off.
