The University of Tokaj has entered the international arena of viticulture research
On April 29, 2022, Pascale Andréani, Ambassador of France to Hungary, and István Stumpf, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation for the University of Tokaj (THE), planted one of the vines that came from Sauternes. The grafts from the Bordeaux wine region in France were planted in the Tarcal vineyard of the Tokaj Research Institute’s Viticulture and Enology Research Nonprofit Ltd. – read in the communiqué.As it was written, Tolcsva and Sauternes in Bordeaux entered into a twinning partnership in 2021. The two wine-growing settlements are characterized by similar characteristics, such as the presence of botrytis cinerea fungus, the production of sweet wines and the terroir that determines the quality of the grapes. As a result, ten to ten semillon, sauvignon blanc and muscadelle vine grafts native to the Bordeaux wine region were placed to Tarcal to take root in the Tokaj wine region. In the spirit of the partnership, furmint and linden stems will also arrive at the site of Sauternes from Tokaj-Hegyalja in the near future.According to a university statement the university’s educational institutions will also establish a “fruitful” relationship with the Institut des Scienses de la Vigne et du Vin (ISVV) at the Université de Bordeaux from Friday. The French institution also excels in viticulture research. In connection with the further cooperation, both teachers and students of THE and the staff of ISVV will have the opportunity to exchange a wide range of professional experience and obtain scholarships – it can be read.
